The complete answer to BYOD, Mobility and Mobile Device ManagementMarch 26th, 2013 by BrightCloud
With users demanding the freedom to choose their own devices, use any app and access their e-mail and documents anywhere, organisations are wrestling with how to provide an easy solution that addresses these user expectations, whilst also meeting IT’s need for security.
Activity has ranged from turning a blind eye to senior executives bringing their own iPad to work through to a complete ban of devices other than the corporate issue.
Recent research from Forrester asked whether the BYOD (bring your own device) trend has peaked. It hasn’t. According to the survey, an estimated 258 million workers around the world choose their own laptops and 129 million buy their own smartphones. The next battleground is tablets:
- Currently 37% of all BYOD smartphones run on Google’s Android platform
- More mobile information workers — 208 million in all — want Apple iPhones
- Currently 12% of mobile enterprise workers use iPads
- But more — 200 million — hope that their next tablet will run Microsoft Windows
Socitm’s (The professional association for public sector ICT management) latest IT Trends report has found that the use of smartphones tablets and bring your own device (BYOD) schemes have come out as the top priorities for IT managers in 2013.
Socitm said that the trend has “come from nowhere in the survey last year, to beat cloud computing, broadband and PSN and environmental and sustainability issues in 2012”.
It found that the increasing pressure from users and the possibility of using BYOD schemes to reduce costs are the main drivers for the change in priorities. It also found that IT managers in the public sector are at risk of being excluded from key decisions affecting themselves and colleagues, due to a perceived lack of competence outside the IT department.
